"Altering The Way You View The World Of Art"
Type of Object:
    Bone Beads
    20th c.

The beads are made from discarded cow horns and bones
collected from slaughterhouses. The white bones and horns
are stained a dark brown except for the portions of the bead
that were coated with a wax that leaves a distinctive pattern
on the beads using a “batik” technique. Wax is painted onto
the bead to create a design, then the remaining surface is
darkened with a vegetable dye. Once the dye is set, the wax
is removed. The resulting graphic is reminiscent of the
African “bogolanfini” fabric known as mudcloth.
